Timekeepers Invitational Squash Tournament: Taking Nigerians to the PSA – Bolaji Akinyemi
Squash in Nigeria unlike three decades ago is gradually gaining prominence among non-elite through the organization of various tournaments across the states of the federation.
One of such tournaments is the Timekeepers Invitational Squash Tournament sponsored by Timekeepers International Limited, a company that specializes in the retail and distribution of watches, jewelry, sunglasses, and other fashion and lifestyle accessories.
Mr. Bolaji Akinyemi, a professional squash player, and C.E.O of Timekeepers International Limited, in an interview with Naija Squash Media, said that being a professional squash player in Nigeria is tough. Moreover, squash players across the world have also had their fair share of the adverse effects of COVID-19. However, for Nigeria squash players the effect is even far worse because “there are now fewer tournaments to play in to earn a living “, Bolaji Akinyemi says. Hence, as a keen squash lover and an advocate of this indoor sport, the intention of sponsoring this tournament is to support and encourage Nigerian squash professionals while also increasing their participation.
The 7- day tournament scheduled to take place in Lagos, at Ivory Health Club in Ikeja beginning from Saturday 10th July till 17th July 2021 has a lineup of 8 stunning professional squash players who are ready to break a leg to win the grand prize of N100,000. The runners-up will also not go home empty because there are consolation prizes to be awarded.
Although this is the first edition of this tournament, the big picture according to Bolaji Akinyemi, is to make Timekeepers Invitational Squash Tournament an annual tournament that will help build more professional squash players and in the long run “grow it into a PSA recognized tournament where professional squash players can improve their PSA rankings”.
